The Health Department, Government of Puducherry, has directed the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) to allot 37 seats to students sponsored by the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) under the government quota during joint counselling this year.
“The counselling for MBBS will be held shortly and you are directed to admit the students sponsored by CENTAC against government quota without fail,” said M.Sarathi, Deputy Secretary to Government (Health), in an order responding to a letter submitted by PIMS.
The order was issued in response to the letter submitted by PIMS dated June 25 stating that the institute would not be allotting seats to the government for the academic year 2018-19. The Health Department said the decision taken at a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister with the representatives of medical institutions was final on the seats to be shared under government quota. The essentiality certificate issued to the college during its inception was under the condition that it would share seats under the government quota, the order said.
“The institution had shared 36 or 37 seats against the sanctioned intake of 100 seats in the past years. Therefore, the decision not to allot any seats to the government this academic year 2018-19 is not acceptable and it is rejected in larger public interest, particularly in the interest of student community of the Union Territory of Puducherry. Hence, as decided in the meeting, 37 students will be sponsored by the CENTAC under government quota during the combined counselling to be held shortly. You are directed to admit the students sponsored by CENTAC against government quota without fail,” it said.
