VELLORE: The Ambur taluk police on Wednesday detained three men in connection with the alleged murder of a close relative of former Union minister P Chidambaram.
The trio allegedly murdered Sivamurthy C, 47, over his illicit relationship with a woman. The police recovered his body from Kelavarapalli reservoir near Hosur.

Sivamurthy, who was the son-in-law of the younger sister of Chidambaram’s wife Nalini, was running a knitwear unit in Tirupur. He went missing on Monday. His father, Chinnasamy, filed a missing complaint with Tirupur north police on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday night, a highway patrol team on the Bengaluru – Chennai NH stopped a car and quizzed three men -- Vimal, Manibarathi and Gowthaman -- travelling in it.

When the trio gave contradictory statements, they were taken to the Ambur taluk police station and questioned further. They confessed to the police that they had kidnapped and murdered Sivamurthy.

Gowthaman told the police that Sivamurthy had developed an illicit relationship with his friend Moorthy’s wife who was working in the knitwear unit. Gowthaman sought the help of Vimal, who is working in the unit, to eliminate Sivamurthy.

As per their plan, Vimal took Sivamurthy to Metupalayam on Sunday in the pretext of introducing him to a bank manager who is willing to offer a loan up to Rs 3 crore. Vimal gave him a sedative-laced drink and strangled him.

Fearing that they would be caught by the police if they disposed of the body in Tirupur region, the trio started searching for a suitable spot. They travelled to Chennai; and from there, they travelled towards Bengaluru carrying the body. They used Sivamurthy's car.

On Tuesday night, the trio disposed of the body near Hosur.

After disposing of the body, they were going to Chennai when the police caught them.

The Ambur police alerted their counterparts in Tirupur. The Tirupur police came to Ambur and took custody of the trio. The police took the trio to Hosur and retrieved the body from Kelavarapalli reservoir.
