KOLKATA: The Darjeeling district administration has claimed absconding Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Bimal Gurung's daughter Annapurna impersonated another girl to continue her studies after flunking the ICSE Class 10 examination.

Annapurna is a practising lawyer in the Calcutta High Court. She could not be contacted for her statement. Sources said she is presently out of India. Bimal Gurung is yet to issue a statement too.

In a June 21 letter to the West Bengal School Education Department principal secretary and to the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination chief executive, the Calcutta High Court Bar Association secretary and the Darjeeling SP among other officials, District Magistrate Joyoshi Dasgupta said an enquiry found Annapurna Gurung impersonated herself as 'Nanda Gurung' and continued her studies after she failed the examination.

"Miss Annapurna Gurung, daughter of Bimal Gurung, got admitted in Class II at Mount Hermon School, Darjeeling on 31.10.1994. She appeared ICSE examination in 2004 from Mount Hermon School but failed to qualify. It then seems Annapurna Gurung got the ICSE pass certificate of one Nanda Gurung from Green Lawns School, Darjeeling," the letter stated.

"Nanda Gurung from Nepal also appeared and passed ICSE exam in 2004 from Green Lawns School Darjeeling. With this pass certificate of Nanda Gurung, Annapurna took admission in Himali Boarding School, Kurseong impersonating herself as Nanda Gurung and continued her studies. This is for your information and further necessary action," it added.
