The Association of People with Albinism in Malawi has reportedly said that it will be fielding at least six candidates for the country's 2019 presidential elections.
According to the Guardian newspaper, the group said its aim was to show that people living with albinism were "more than their skin".
Albinism was caused by the lack of the melanin pigmentation in the skin, which resulted in lack of dark colour, sensitivity to the sun and a compromised eyesight.
Al Jazeera reported that since late 2014, at least 117 people with albinism had been attacked in Malawi. Children and adults had had their limbs hacked off with kitchen knives and machetes. Around 20 had been killed.
The attacks stemmed from a belief that body parts belonging to people with albinism contained magical powers.
