Rajkot: A professor of Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachchh University was assaulted allegedly by some students associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) who also blackened his face, on Tuesday. The ABVP is the student wing of the BJP.
Police arrested five persons for the attack on Tuesday night, after the professor — Girish Bakshi — filed an FIR with the B-Division police station of Bhuj.

According to the FIR, when Bakshi was teaching a class, some students barged into his classroom and thrashed him. They then dragged him outside the classroom and blackened his face with some chemical. The students alleged that Bakshi had changed the voter list of senate election to be held on July 22. They also said he had deleted the names of some students who are ABVP voters. According to the complaint, the attackers warned other professors that they were liable to get the same treatment. Bakshi, who complained of a burning sensation on his skin, was taken to hospital where he registered the police complaint. He is the head of the election committee.

Police have arrested Ram Bhimshi Gadhvi, Tejas Mahesh Pavagadhi, Ravi Momaya Gadhvi, Kirit Jadeja, and Dhruv Joshi. Another accused, Bhargav Shah, is still at large. All the accused have been booked for rioting, intimidating, and obstructing a public servant from performing duty.

A group of students and teaching staff have registered a strong protest against the assault. Most colleges remained closed on Wednesday.
