BJP functionary detained with bullets at airport

The Central Industrial Security Force personnel manning the Coimbatore airport, on Friday morning, detained the Coimbatore zonal in-charge of the Bharatiya Janata Party, G.K. Selvakumar, as he was found carrying bullets in his hand luggage.

According to the City Police sources, after the security personnel caught him with eight bullets, Mr. Selvakumar had told them that he had a licensed weapon and had carried the bag that contained the bullets by mistake.

On being asked to furnish the weapon license, Mr. Selvakumar had told them that he would furnish it in a while as it was at his home. After a while, he furnished the license. Meanwhile, the security personnel informed the Peelamedu Police, who rushed to the spot and conducted an inquiry. After ascertaining the validity of the claims of Mr. Selvakumar, the police obtained a statement and let him off. They also returned the bullets. Mr. Selvakumar who supposed to board an eight a.m. flight, missed it, and instead boarded the 11 a.m. flight, the sources added.

NCC cadet dies

during camp

National Cadet Corps cadet and second year college student P. Haripriya (18) of Sathyamangalam died during an NCC camp at a private college near Saravanampatty on Thursday.

The Saravanampatty police said that the student had developed breathing problems and fell unconscious on returning to her room, after attending a cultural programme.

Fellow cadets informed the camp organisers and they rushed her to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared her dead. The police have registered a case in this connection.

Two killed in accidents

A motorcyclist and pedestrian were killed in two different accidents in Coimbatore Rural Police limits in the last two days.

In the first incident in Annur Police limits, R. Dharmaraj (38) of Allikulam, Annur, was killed in a collision involving his motorcycle and a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus near the Kurukkiliyampalayam Bus Stop on the Annur-Mettupalayam Road.

The police said the accident took place around 11 p.m. on June 24 and in the impact of collision, Dharmaraj died on the spot. The police have registered a case against the bus driver S. Christopher Jerald (43) of Sirumugai.

In the second incident in Pollachi East Police limits, pedestrian C. Velliammal (58) of Chinnampalayam, Pollachi, succumbed to injuries she sustained in an accident involving a goods carrier.

The police said that the vehicle driver G.Rajeswaran of Dindigul drove the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and knocked down the woman at Chinnampalayam, on the Pollachi-Udumalpet Road. The police have registered a case in this connection.

Three arrested

Peelamedu Police have arrested V. Dhananjeyan (28) of Telugupalayam, R. Saravanakumar (37) of Gandhimanagar and S. Pradeepkumar (29) of Madathukulam on charges of assaulting Gandhipuram resident R. Prabhu (34) with a billhook in Cheran Nagar on June 24. The police are on the lookout for another person who had accompanied the three.

The police said the four persons went to Cheran Nagar and assaulted Prabhu, who was there to participate in a function organised to inaugurate a new shop.

They threatened Prabhu, a realtor, for being a rival to one Senthil, assaulted him and fled the scene.

Two held

The Selvapuram police have arrested N. Karthik (23) of Machampalayam and C. Vijay (25) of Sundakkamuthur on charges of stealing two mobile phones from Machampalayam resident R. Jegankumar (23) near Bharathi Nagar Road, Selvapuram, on June 25.
