Karkala woman’s organs save seven

Seven persons will benefit from the donation of organs of a brain dead woman from Karkala at the Kasturba Hospital here on Tuesday.

A press release issued by the hospital said Nirmala Bhat, 51, wife of Vasudev Bhat was severely injured in an accident at Tellar Road in Karkala on June 22. She was referred to Kasturba Hospital here and was admitted to the ICU around 1 a.m. on June 23.

She was declared brain dead at 12.30 p.m. on June 25 by four senior doctors of the Medical Board as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994.

Mr. Bhat and family members expressed their willingness to donate her organs. Her breathing was supported by the ventilator so as to harvest two heart valves, both corneas, both kidneys and liver. As decided by the Transplantation Authority, the corneas and one kidney would be provided to patients admitted in Kasturba Hospital, here.

The liver will be harvested by surgeons from BGS Hospital, Bengaluru, for a identified patient. Two heart valves would be used on patient from Bengaluru, and one kidney for a patient in Mangaluru.

Avinash Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, said: “With this noble gesture of the family, seven needy patients would receive extension of their lives through transplantation.”
