AHMEDABAD: Those prized luxury sedans, pumping out tons of torque with turbocharged
engines producing 300 to 500 horsepower, are crying out for the need for speed on city roads, literally.
According to a travel speed and accessibility study by
Cept University's Centre of Excellence in Urban Transport (CEUT), the average travel speed in Ahmedabad ranges between 7 kmph and 22 kmph during peak hours, for radial distances between 2.5 km and 10 km.
Ahmedabad roads are quite egalitarian, where people in cars and those on bicycles move at practically the same speed during peak hours. For instance, for a radial distance of 2.5 km, with Kalupur railway station at the centre, the average speed on roads to eight outward destinations-Shahpur, Jamalpur Darwaza, Kankaria, Vivekanand School, ESI Hospital in Bapunagar and Vikas Estate - during peak hours was between 7 kmph and 16 kmph.
When the radial distance is extended to 5 km, to 16 locations, including many in the western part of the city, average speeds pick up marginally to a maximum of 22 kmph.
