Several students who would earlier shy away from taking admission in Delhi University colleges located around South Campus now have a reason to cheer with the newly opened Pink Line of the Delhi Metro making the colleges more accessible.
Outstation students would complain that finding accommodation near colleges in South Campus was an expensive affair and therefore, would stay near Satya Niketan market opposite Sri Venkateshwara College even though it was full of coaching centres.
Safer option
Parents said that fear for their children’s safety has been alleviated with the opening of the Pink Line at the Delhi Metro.
Sanjay Kumar Singh, whose daughter is in the process of applying to Maitreyi College, said, “Safety is an issue for women across Delhi and the Metro is a safer option.”
Meenu Jain and Jyoti Khanna agreed that safety was of paramount importance for their daughters and that the location of Maitreyi College near Metro stations and embassies gave them a sense of security.
Deepak Samuel said, “The Metro is safe and saves time. So, as a parent, I feel good about my daughter’s safety at Jesus and Mary College.”
Increased connectivity
Students seemed to agree with their parents about the increased connectivity of the DU South campuses to the rest of the city.
Ciyani Benny, a third-year student at JMC, said, “The Pink Line is a little slow, but it will make an impact on students because it saves time while travelling.” Earlier, students of JMC used to get off at Race Course Metro Station and then take a shared auto to their college.
