HRD proposes draft Act to replace UGC

The government on Wednesday proposed the draft of a new Act with which it seeks to replace the (UGC) -- the principal funding body for universities.

The Commission will come with powers to shut down non-compliant and bogus institutes and will have the mandate for improving academic standards and training of the teachers.

"The Commission shall have the power to grant authorization for starting of academic operations on the basis of their compliance with norms of academic quality," the statement read.
