Drive launched in Hry to curb drug abuse

Haryana Director General of Police, BS Sandhu on Tuesday said that a month-long special campaign has been launched to crack down on drug peddlers in the state.

The campaign would continue upto July 20, said the DGP while speaking at a one-day seminar on the topic of ‘Preventing Drug Abuse – The Issues Involved’ organised by the Haryana Police,

He said that Police Department is geared up to fight against the menace. Drug addiction has become a very serious issue for the society at large and all-out efforts were being made by the Police Department to combat and prevent it.

Under the campaign, police have arrested 100 people during the last two months in Sirsa alone, he added. At the seminar, the senior officers of Haryana Civil and Police Administration suggested the need of designing a cohesive strategy and close coordination between various departments at state and district level to effectively deal with the problem of drug addiction.

The seminar was organized to mark the International Day against Drug abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Police Officers Institute at Panchkula.

Navraj Sandhu, Haryana Additional Chief Secretary stressed the need for designing a common and cohesive strategy to effectively deal with the problem of drug addiction, and said that all stakeholders must contribute their efforts to eradicating this menace from the society completely.

Speaking on this occasion, the Additional Chief Secretary, Medical Education and Research, Amit Jha, laid stress on close coordination between all linked departments, and added that the problem of drug addiction could not tackled only at drug de-addiction centres and mental health centres.

Among those present included DGP Hqrs. KK Mishra, Additional Solicitor General of India, Chetan Mittal, ADGP STF Punjab, Harpreet Singh Sidhu, ADGP Administration, Sudhir Chowdhary, ADGP Operations AS Chawla and  about 150 participants from the Department of Police, Health, Social Justice and Empowerment and NGOs.
