The Emergency: PM Modi lashes out at Congress over democracy’s darkest hour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at the Congress for imposition Emergency in the country. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed emergency for nearly two years between 1975 to 1977. It is also considered one of the most turbulent times in modern Indian politics. During this period, most of the politicians who opposed the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, were arrested in huge numbers and the media faced heavy censorship. Indira Gandhi exercised extraordinary powers when she invoked Article 352 of the Constitution. Police was used to detain protestors and strike leaders. Some of the prominent leaders were JP, Vijayaraje Scindia, Morarji Desai, Jivatram Kripalani, and LK Advani.
