Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called upon those who have made the cut in the Civil Services examinations to remain sensitive to the needs of the underprivileged.

Inaugurating a function organised by the State Civil Services Academy to felicitate those who have cleared the Civil Services examination here on Monday, Mr. Vijayan said while those in the creamy layer of society did not require support from anyone, the poor have a tough time to meet their basic needs. “Being able to keep special concern for them in mind would be the biggest achievement for a civil servant,” he said.

Mr. Vijayan congratulated the 35 winners and commended the Academy’s efforts to nurture a generation of civil servants.

Despite a high literacy rate, Kerala falls behind when it comes to competitive examinations, he said and added that the Education Department was working on new strategies to improve the quality of higher education.

Education Minister C. Ravindranath presided over the function.

The Minister asked Civil Services aspirants to inculcate reading as a habit in order to gain deep knowledge in a subject.
