Supreme Court allows non-accredited journalists to carry mobile phones inside courtrooms

The Supreme Court of India now allows non-accredited journalists to carry a mobile phone into the courtrooms, according to a circular from the Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra.

This announcement comes after journalists took up the Supreme Court ruling that allowed only accredited media persons to use mobile phones.

The circular that was released on Monday by Assistant Registrar Dr. Sushil Kumar Sharma stated that "Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India has been pleased to allow the Media Persons/ Journalists, who have been issued six months passes by the Registry, to carry mobile phones inside the Court Rooms on silent mode and that the Deputy Registrar."

However, the notice also warned that phones could be confiscated if it caused any 'disturbance/nuisance' during the court proceedings.

This new ruling will enable freelance journalists to report through social media, including coverages such as live-tweeting.
