Coimbatore: In an effort to bring new innovation to their alma mater, the alumni of the Siddapudur Corporation Higher Secondary School have helped the school get a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) lab.
Members of the Siddapudur Higher Secondary School Alumni Association said they had always wanted to bring any new innovation to their school first. “The Siddapudur school is the first corporation school in the city to get a STEM lab,” said G V Ravi, association’s president.
Equipment for STEM training like motors, sensors, mechanical components and computers with lab view software are housed in school’s computer lab. They can be combined to form robots, through which students would be able to grasp the concepts of electronics, robotics, technology and design easily.
The lab was inaugurated last week and classes will commence from July, S Raja, head of CSR activities of CRI Pumps said. The firm has pitched in to help the alumni association install the lab. “Students from Class VII, VIII and IX would be trained in the STEM lab, in batches of 30 students each,” he said. The equipment has been purchased for Rs 3 lakh. CRI Pumps and Coimbatore Metropolitan Ladies Circle contributed funds for the lab along with the alumni association, Raja said.
The alumni association has also been actively helping the school get better facilities, not only in terms of building and infrastructure, but also in the school’s daily functioning. “We also have been providing breakfast for underprivileged students at the school. We also have been helping the school become better in providing noon meals,” said Ravi. The alumni association has also adopted two corporation schools in Ganapathy and Gandhimanagar.
