While most often investigations related to drug abuse cases focus on penalising victims of abuse, the attention needs to shift to nabbing the perpetrators, said Neelamani N. Raju, DG and IGP, Karnataka.
She was addressing police personnel as part of a workshop on tackling cases of drug abuse on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Trafficking on Tuesday.
While observing that cracking drug-related cases had been pushed to the backburner, Ms. Raju urged officers to take this up as a priority issue. She asked them to focus on nabbing the perpetrators rather than limiting themselves to nabbing victims of drug abuse.
“Most of our investigation focuses on people taking drugs. It's a zero sum game. We are not getting the suppliers. We need to break the chain of supply and demand,” she said.
Former DG and IGP Ajai Kumar Singh, who was also present on the occasion, asked police personnel to work towards strengthening their information network in order to effectively bust these rackets.
A handbook on implementation of existing laws against drugs and narcotic substances was released. In the day-long session, officials were given an understanding into various ways in which the rackets operate.
