Constable found dead at ground near Tasmac shop

A police constable was found dead on Monday at a school ground near a Tasmac shop near Sriperumbudur.

The police suspect that he could have been beaten to death on Sunday night by tipplers, who were consuming liquor on the ground.

P. Mohanraj, a grade- I constable, was recently transferred to the Sunguvarchatram police station from the Otteri station.

A native of Poigai Nallur village in Vellore district, he went on leave last week and was expected to report for night duty on Sunday. However, he did not turn up at the station, the police said.

On Monday morning, the Sunguvarchatram police received information from residents of Thirumangalam Kandigai near Sriperumbudur that they had found a body on the ground of a school near a Tasmac shop.

The police found Mohanraj’s motorcycle lying outside the school premises and the body on the ground. The body, the police said, bore marks of deep wounds. Broken glass bottles and stones were found strewn around the body.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police P.C. Thenmozhi and Kancheepuram District Superintendent of Police Santhosh Hadimani inspected the spot and held an inquiry.

The body was sent to the Government taluk hospital, Sriperumbudur, for post-mortem.

Additional Superintendent of Police Chandrasekaran told The Hindu, “Tipplers visiting the Tasmac outlet often get into brawls. Mohanraj might have found tipplers creating a ruckus and intervened. This might have provoked them.”
