Several BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday targeted the Congress for “scripting one of the darkest chapters in the history of Indian democracy by imposing Emergency in 1975. Congress, on the other hand, hit back at the saffron party accusing it of imposing an “undeclared emergency” in the country. Here is a look at the reactions of various political leaders on Emergency -
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister
“Today's youth do not have an idea of what happened during Emergency. They will not realise the how living without freedoms can be.”
Randeep S Surjewala, Congress
"Aurangzeb had imprisoned his father, But Aurangzeb Modi has imprisoned country's Democracy, its institutions and even his own party."

Arun Jaitley, Union minister
"The CPI was an unashamed supporter of the Emergency. Its political line was that Emergency was a war on fascism. Though theoretically the CPI (M) was opposed to the Emergency and critical of it, but it was not an active participant in the struggle against the Emergency."

Ahmed Patel, Congress
After 4 years, fear of losing 2019 elections is haunting the government and hence they are trying to take refuge in the events of 1975 Emergency. But the fact is after 1977, Indira ji apologised, corrected her mistakes and people of India voted her back. Will they apologize for the undeclared emergency for last 4 years? People are being lynched and threatened, agencies are being misused, economic and civil liberties are being curtailed."

Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister
"We will include the whole story of Emergency in the curriculum. Children should know the reality of that time. That is why the Emergency period is considered to be the second freedom struggle."

Ashok Gehlot, Congress
"This is both disappointing as well as surprising that the people who are known for running the country and government in a dictatorial manner are today blaming a woman who has been a symbol of women empowerment across the world of the dictatorship."

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Minister
"We witnessed the emergency very closely, there was an atmosphere of fear in the country. The Emergency was declared only to save Indira Gandhi. The plan to impose Emergency was made six months in advance.

Anand Sharma, Congress
‏"Mr Prime Minister, don’t insult Indira Gandhi’s contribution and martyrdom to hide your own miserable performance, betrayal of people’s trust and monumental failures on all fronts. For a change, give an account of your non-performance."

Sitaram Yechury, CPM
‏"Distorting history is their occupation. History has recorded CPM martyrs and heroic sacrifices in this struggle for the restoration of Democracy. History also records two servile letters of the RSS chief pledging support to Indira Gandhi's 20 point programme & pleading release."

Sanjay Jha, Congress
‏"You see the car, Narendra Modi Ji? This is not from a Bollywood stunt film, but it happened in my great city of #Mumbai. 10 people have died; that’s the real #emergency. I hope to hear your apology (reminder, #BJP has been in #BMC power for 25 years.) #ModiKillingDemocracy

Smriti Irani, Union minister
"India's fight for immortality, pride, strength and honour has brought us all under one roof living in unity. When the emergency took place in the country for a 21-month period, from 1975 to 1977, people from all walks of life came together for fight against it as one- which was a proud moment for us Indians."

Rachit Seth, Congress
‏"BJP is raking #Emergency this June, because this is the last June which they would see power in Delhi before 2019. Period."
