Australia still harbour hopes of progressing to the second round, but they’ll need to win to have any chance. However, Peru will be up for this, as even though they’re heading home they’ll want to give their large following of fans something to cheer about. The South Americans might be scratching their heads wondering just how they’ve lost both their matches after they dominated their opener against Denmark and were the better side in the second half against France. We think they’ll finally make that count here, as South American sides have won 12 of 16 World Cup meetings with those from the Asian confederation since 1990
It’s likely to be a hard-fought affair though as Bert van Marwijk has got this Socceroos squad remarkably well drilled and they’ve been level at half-time in eight of their last nine matches. We don’t see that being a problem though as, against teams we had ranked below them, Peru have won six of their last nine matches to be level at half-time.
Peru’s relative lack of height was targeted at the outset of the tournament as an area of weakness and, going forward, whipping crosses in isn’t their preferred mode of attack, as they’d rather try and thread a ball through the middle. As a result, they’ve not had more than four corners in any of their last seven matches.
