SALEM: The student and known activist Valarmathi arrested by Chennai police in another case here on Tuesday. Valarmathi (22), a resident of Veeranam and he is second M.A. mass communication student at Periyar University. She is known for her firebrand speech and for distributing pamphlets to students at Gorimedu against the methane project, the police arrested her last year and later detained her under Goondas Act stating other cases pending against her. Later following thr High Court verdict, she was released from prison.
Meanwhile, on June 19th, she came to Achankuttapatti, where revenue officials conducted land measuring works for the proposed Salem-Chennai Green Expressway Corridor project. She spoke among the villagers and farmers and asked them not the hand over the land to the project. Following her speech, the City police arrested her and remanded her in Salem women prison. Later she moved bail petition at Salem District Court. But heard the case, the District Court denied giving bail for her.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Chennai Vadapalani police arrested her in another case and gave the arrest order to her. Police sources told Express that in January this year Valarmathi participated in Achamillai Achamillai film audio launch function at Vadapalani. Speaking in the function, Valarmathi said that one day we will attack police by grabbing their lathi which they now using against us to disburse our protest.
Following this speech, the Vadapalani police registered case under Section 153 (wantedly giving provocation with intent to cause riot- if riot be committed or if not committed) and Section 505 (statements conducting to public mischief) of IPC. The Vadapalani police will produce her before Saidapet Court on June 28th, sources added.
