The Met Office issued a weather warning today, urging Britons to be cautious as “there is an 80 percent probability of heatwave conditions between 9am Tuesday and 6pm Thursday in parts of England”.

Meteorologist Carol Kirkwood told BBC Breakfast  viewers: “Today once again we are looking at high values because high pressure is firmly in charge of our weather.

“The jet stream is to the north of us allowing this high pressure to stay.”

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year with London reaching 30 degrees Celsius and in many areas the temperatures were in the mid or high 20s.

The warm weather is set to continue over the next few days, with just a bit of cloud in some places.

An area of high pressure is responsible for the hot weather and is positioned to the south of the country.

Today will start of clear and bright, although a few light winds are possible in some parts of the UK.

In most major towns and cities across central and southern Britain the temperatures will be around the mid teens.

But cooler further north in places such as eastern Scotland and the north east of England.

Onshore winds blowing from the seas towards the east coast are expected to push the heat westwards, meaning temperatures in central and western sections of the UK are likely to be the highest this afternoon.

Norwich will not be as hot as previous days, however, London, Birmingham and Cardiff could see temperatures soar above 25 degrees Celsius.

Tonight it will be mostly clear with the odd cloud over northern Scotland gradually clearing north and a few light winds.

Another bright and sunny day on Wednesday, despite cooler temperatures in Hull and Norwich - which were previously two of the warmest places in Britain.

The hottest weather will be in the west of the country tomorrow where figures could reach 30 degrees Celsius.

In the next couple of days temperatures will be in the mid or high 20s, but some could equal the record value of 30 degrees Celsius.

Best of the sunshine in Glasgow, Enniskillen, Wrexham and Oxford where figures rise well above 20 degrees Celsius.

With temperatures set to sizzle well into the 30s all over the UK for the foreseeable future, bookmaker Ladbrokes have cut odds on the hottest day of 2018 to surpass 30 degrees Celsius.

It's now odds-on at 4/7 for this month to go down in history as the warmest ever June on record.

Ladbrokes spokeswoman Jessica Bridge said: "The gorgeous weather is melting our calculators, and the odds are in freefall.

“The mercury looks set to stay well into the 30s all week, and we could see the hottest day of the year record broken on more than one occasion at this rate.
