A man called 111 for assistance after his use of illegal drugs did not go to plan.

Police were called about midday on Monday to a man outside the Mobil station in the small Waitaki District township of Omarama who needed ambulance assistance, a police communications spokeswoman said.

The man said he had consumed cannabis the night before and was having a reaction, the spokeswoman said.

He was not in possession of any drugs at the time, and was not charged by police.

St John communications advisor Gerard Campbell said the man was taken to the Twizel Medical Centre.
