Harrowing eyewitness account of man's skate park death

Auckland Council has worked with the New Zealand Transport Agency to prevent access to the top of a building a skate ramp is built against.

Pitiphong Sangsirichat spent 90 minutes contemplating a dangerous 'drop-in' skating move off a ramp at an Auckland park before making a decision that would ultimately kill him.

The 25-year-old was seriously injured after falling from the top of the ramp at Victoria Park Skate Plaza in the city centre on January 27.

A Coronial Services spokesperson told Stuff that Sangsirichat  had died in hospital two days later.

"Pitiphong Sangsirichat's death is an active case before the coroner," the spokesperson said.

Sangsirichat was a cleaner and based in the Auckland suburb of Panmure.

Auckland Council said his death has prompted a redesign of the ramp to prevent it happening again.

Eye-witness Brad Christensen was a frequent user of the park and said he had never seen anyone attempt to "drop-in" from the top of the ramp before the man's death.

"The day this all unfolded was quite strange," Christensen said.
