Wigs donated to help cancer patients

The Cherian Foundation, in association with Ladies Circle India, has donated 30 natural hair wigs to the Cancer Institute, Adyar.

According to a release, the wigs were distributed to patients during an event, ‘Tresses with Love, a wig donation drive to help the marginalised cancer patients,’ organised at the institute on Monday.

V. Surendran, assistant professor and Head of the Department of Pyscho-oncology, Cancer Institute, said there was a need to create awareness among insurance companies to advocate wigs as prosthetics as it would go a long way in helping marginalised cancer patients face life with a renewed confidence, the release said.

The Cherian Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of B & H Exports, has been conducting wig donation campaigns by collaborating with like-minded organisations. Sara B. Cherian, trustee of the Foundation, said the goal was to ensure that the wigs reached the marginalised patients, making them look and feel more like themselves, and motivate them to come forward for treatment.

The hair donation drive was kicked off in April. Members of the Ladies Circle India and their daughters from the age of eight years came forward to donate their tresses, a minimum of 10 inches. T.G. Sagar, director of Cancer Institute, and Veda Bestin, national president, Ladies Circle India, were present.
