Wilmington police have arrested a Newark man and charged him with shooting a 20-year-old woman in the back Saturday evening.

Police charged 27-year-old Tymir Walley with first-degree assault and possession of a firearm while committing a felony. He was sent to Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in lieu of  $21,500 cash bail.

Police were dispatched to Fifth and Monroe streets on a fight call around 7:15 p.m. Saturday. Arriving officers heard shots being fired, police said.

The brawl began at a liquor store in the 700 block of West Fourth Street, on the corner of Monroe Street, where the struggle spilled over onto the street.

Officers found the victim with a gunshot wound to her upper back, police said. The woman was taken to the hospital by paramedics and was listed in critical condition.

Witnesses told police the shooter was about 6-feet tall and wearing a red shirt and blue jeans. He then showed a hand gun and fired several shots into the crowd, court documents said. One of the rounds stuck the victim in the back.

It appears the victim was a bystander and not involved in the fight, court documents said.

The shooting may have been related to the fight in the area. There were four casings and a bullet found in the block of the crime scene and fight.

Tips led to a search warrant Sunday for Walley, who was walking his dog when police apprehended him, court documents said. Police said he was still wearing the same red shirt witnesses described.

His home had three guns in it, one of which matched the casings at the crime scene, court documents said.
