Mumbai on rail alert: Flights hit, locals running late; water pumps put on standby

Intermittent rain/thundershower likely to occur in city and suburbs with heavy to very heavy falls at one or two places in the next 48 hours, said the IMD.
Several local trains were held up or running late and bumper-to-bumper traffic was reported in many places across Mumbai that's seeing heavy rainfall since last night. Water-logging was also reported from low-lying areas with pumps kept on stand-by to avoid trouble.

According to ANI, the rains have claimed two lives so far. Five people were reportedly injured when a tree fell on them at MG road, near Metro Cinema in Mumbai, yesterday.

"Colaba has recorded 90 mm & Santacruz has recorded 195 mm of rain at 5.30 am. Heavy to very heavy rain to continue," said Indian Meteorological Department today.

The MeT department also said that continuous rain/thundershower is likely to occur in city and suburbs with heavy to very heavy rain fall at a few places in the next 24 hours. It has also issued forecast for next 48 hours.

"Intermittent rain/thundershower likely to occur in city and suburbs with heavy to very heavy falls at one or two places in the next 48 hours," said the weather agency.

Western Railway said that some section of suburban trains services are affected due to the rains.

"WR Suburban trains are running with no disruption. There is slight delay due to low visibility in some areas due to rains.....Due to very heavy rains, UP line between Bhilad & Sanjan in Mumbai Division is affected from 7.45 am. Single line working is being planned through Down line (for UP trains too)," said the railway.

Some inter-state trains are also running late.

"Due to heavy rain between Virar and Surat all Mail express trains arriving at Bandra Terminus, Dadar Terminus and Mumbai central are expected to be arrived late," said the railways in a tweet.

The heavy rain affected the arrival of flights at Mumbai airport on Sunday for about 30 minutes. “The main runway was non-operational from 3.43pm to 4.17pm for maintenance,” said an MIAL spokesperson.
