BHUBANESWAR: As many as 15
cobra hatchlings, one female
adult cobra and four
Russell’s Viper snakes have been found from another house in
Kantabania village in
Dhamnagar block and three cobra hatchings from nearby Naranga village in Bhadrak district on Monday. In the last three days more than 140
poisonous snakes have been rescued from different houses spreading panic in the area.
“This is something unprecedented and unbelievable. Every day snakes are being rescued from newer areas. The snakes are found generally in soggy and moist areas like under the floor of mud houses or on wet cracks and clevises of wet walls and thatched roofs. Large crowds and humid weather condition are causing hindrances in the rescue operation,”
Seikh Mirza, a local snake rescuer.
The cobra hatchlings on Monday were found under the stone grinder of Gouranga Jena, a farmer’s house. When they dug up the mud floor around 15 hatchings came out.
“Expecting more snakes we decided to dig the whole floor. Now we are homeless and in inclement weather where will I stay now. The district administration should come forward and give us some financial support for the natural calamity,” said Basanti Jena, wife of Gouranga Jena.
The forest officials on Monday released about 120 cobra hatchlings, three adult cobras and two common kraits rescued from Shyampur village on Saturday in Hadagarh Sanctuary.
“May to October is the mating season of snakes and during this season they lay eggs and hatch them. Now with the onset of monsoon the snake hatchlings are coming out from their hiding places. Our people are alert and are taking help of local snake rescuers to rescue and release of snakes found in large numbers in different parts of the district in the last few days,” said divisional forest officer of Bhadrak, Amlan Nayak.
