Boaters planning to be on Candlewood Lake this Saturday should be cautious around the Danbury area because of the annual volunteer fire fighters’ fireworks show.

The Candlewood Lake Authority’s Marine Patrol, in conjunction with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Environmental Conservation Police, will be stopping all boats entering Danbury Bay for a safety inspection, which will only take a few minutes.

All boats must have a life jacket for each person on board. Children younger than 13 must wear their life jacket at all times while the boat is under way. All boats must also have their required lights in working order.

Any boat found not having the required safety equipment will be ordered back to shore to make the necessary repairs and will not be allowed to enter the area until they meet these safety requirements.

Boats are required to use “slow-no-wake” speeds when they pass law enforcement or fire rescue vessels using their lights, as well as leaving the viewing area.

The Marine Patrol will be setting up a safety zone just north of City Island in Danbury Bay. A safety lane will also be created along the eastern shore of Danbury Bay. No vessels will be allowed to moor or anchor south of the safety zone or in the safety lane about five hours prior to and during the event.

All boats near City Island must also maintain a “slow-no-wake” speed beginning at 4 p.m. to allow for the fireworks company to set up the fireworks. No boats will be allowed to travel south of the safety zone into the display area beginning two hours before the event starts.
