Memorial site growing for 15-year-old killed by car in Albert Park parking lot

Friends and family are bringing tributes, flowers and notes to a growing memorial site for 15-year-old Athan McEwen. The young boy was tragically killed by a vehicle in a parking lot in Albert Park on Sunset Drive, Friday night.

Details remain thin on exactly what happened but police say it was a single vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. EMS took McEwen to hospital where he pronounced dead.

Dozens of friends, classmates and neighbours have visited the parking lot to pay their respects over the weekend.

Regina Police Service school resource officers from Martin Leboldus were on hand this morning, along with several of McEwen’s classmates. Regina Catholic Schools said in a statement that counseling would be made available to students in need.

McEwen’s family spoke with Global News and said he was hanging out with friends in the parking lot on Friday night, and that drugs and alcohol were not a factor, adding it was a tragic accident.

Neighbors have said this is a popular hangout for teenagers at night.

Messages from his family read: “My hero… Love Dad” and “I love you so much my boy… Mom”.

On social media family members posted about his passion for motocross.

There will be a celebration of life on Friday at Speers funeral home and a service on Saturday at the Greek orthodox church.

People are invited to wear a motocross jersey in memory of Athen. They wrote his free spirit will live within us forever.

Regina police say an investigation is underway, but they don’t have any updated information they can provide to the public at this time.
