PUNE: A 20-year-old youth was arrested on Monday, a day after he attacked a man (25) with a cement block following a road rage near Anandnagar on Sunday afternoon.

The complainant, Avinash Dhumal, of Rambaug Colony suffered severe head injuries and undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The Kothurd police have registered an offence against the arrested suspect and his minor accomplice under sections 323 and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons and means) of IPC.

Avinash stated in his complaint that the duo attacked him when he had objected to their act of riding motorcycle on the no-entry road, heading towards the Ideal Colony ground from Paud Road near Ananadnagar.

An officer of the Kothrud police said except heavy vehicles, all other vehicles were allowed on that road. “We are suspecting road rage could be the reason behind the attack,” he said.

Avinash’s uncle, Ram Dhumal, told TOI that his nephew had five stitches on his head and suffered injuries on his face as the duo had assaulted him with a cement block. “On Sunday afternoon around 1pm, Avinash was returning home on his motorcycle. He had stopped at the signal at the chowk on Paud Road near Anandnagar,” he said.

Ram said the two youths came towards Avinash from the wrong side. “When my nephew protested, the duo abused him,” Ram said.

He said Avinash and the duo then entered a brawl. “The duo suddenly started hitting Avinash with hands and legs. One of them picked up the cement block from the road and hit Avinash on his head and face,” Ram said.

He said a woman and her son passing by the spot tried to intervene. “The duo abused that woman and beat her up son, too. When people started gathering, they fled,” Ram said.

The Kothrud police officer said the suspected youth was taken into custody from Jay Bhavaninagar. “We have not detained the minor,” he said.
