VARANASI: Yagya Narain Chaubey of Bihar, one of six persons who had complained of losing sight after cataract surgery at Marwadi Charitable hospital in the city on June 12, died during treatment at SSL hospital of Banaras Hindu University on Sunday.

On the directive of district magistrate, chief medical officer VB Singh had formed a five-member team to probe the matter of sight loss after surgery at Marwadi hospital.

Chaubey's grandson Sushil said, "We were taking our grandfather for eye check up on Saturday when his health started deteriorating. We had to admit him to the emergency ward of SSL hospital. He died during treatment on Sunday."

On June 12, Chaubey and five others patients, all of 50-65 years of age, underwent cataract surgery at Marwadi Hospital. On June 15 they complained of loss of sight. A probe was ordered in the matter. Later, corrective surgery was performed on all the six patients at a private hospital. On June 17, the DM and the CMO claimed that the condition of all the affected patients was normal.

Singh said that the investigation team could not complete the probe in the scheduled time due to Dr Siddh Gopal's death. The investigation report is expected after Monday, he added.
