SANTA PONCA: Germany's Tatjana Maria clinched her first career title at the age of 30 on Sunday by beating Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova 6-4, 7-5 in the Mallorca WTA grasscourt final.

Maria, ranked at 79 and who gave birth to a daughter in 2013, was playing in her first final but made a mockery of the 59 spots between her and defending champion Sevastova in the world rankings to triumph in the Wimbledon warm-up event.

"It was amazing, the support from the first day," said Maria.

"All the German fans, also everybody, it was really amazing, and I felt it a lot, also today for me."

She added: "It's a great event, it's a really nice place. You really enjoy every day, so I'm really happy I could win it here."
