Player of the Year

Riley Frizell

South, Sophomore

Make it 2-for-2 for the area’s best player. What did Frizell do for an encore performance to her freshman season when she was The News-Herald player of the year? The shorter list would be what didn’t she do. She hit .521 with a slugging percentage of .958. She had 22 extra-base hits, including eight home runs. She had 42 RBI and scored 42 runs. She walked 29 times — 11 of them being intentional when teams opted to just put her on instead of risking her blasting one out of the park. As a pitcher, Frizell went 13-4 (with three one-run losses), striking out 100 and walking 22. She led South to the Western Reserve Conference title and to the Division I regional tournament in Akron. Said Frizell, “It was amazing going to regionals. An experience I would never trade for anything. Just getting there showed how much more growth we have and what we can accomplish next year. Our goal next year is to make it to the state tournament and be in position to play for a state title.”

Coach of the Year

Joe Medlen

Perry

The Pirates have had their share of close calls in recent years at the Division II district level, but this year they kicked the door down. Perry defeated top-ranked Jefferson to go to the Division II regional tournament in Akron. With a young team, Medlen guided his team to the Chagrin Valley Conference title and nearly advanced to the regional championship game. Aspirations will be high next year for the Pirates and Medlen.
