Coric provided a huge upset by beating the Swiss star in the final of the Halle Open.
Meanwhile, Cilic put on his own dazzling display to beat former world No 1 Novak Djokovic in the Queen’s final.
It was a fantastic weekend for Croatian sports as their football team also beat Argentina 3-0 on Thursday to sit top of their World Cup group.
“A big week for Croats,” Cilic said.
“I didn’t watch Borna unfortunately, we watched football before the match, but it was an amazing with for Borna.
It is his first title on grass and his first ATP 500 so a great week for Croatians
“Beating Alex [Zverev] in the first round and going through the draw and then beating Roger today.
“It is his first title on grass and his first ATP 500 so a great week for Croatians.”
Federer lost his world No 1 title with his defeat against Coric.
But Cilic believes the 36-year-old will still be a dangerous opponent at Wimbledon next month.

“He has had a great two weeks and he hasn’t played two weeks in a row for a long time,” Cilic added.
“He had a tough match in a three-setter. I think Roger’s motivational level is so much higher in Grand Slams.
“He has been showing his best tennis.”
