TRICHY: Two men were chased, caught and beaten up by villagers at Perumampatti in Trichy district of Tamil Nadu on Monday on suspicion that they were child lifters.
On seeing the two strangers, the villagers grew suspicious. Sensing trouble, the duo wearing Muslim costumes started to run. The villagers chased them for two kilometres and caught them at Aandi Goundampatti.

The villagers searched the shoulder bags of the duo and found some thayathus (cylindrical capsules made of metals to tie around the waist of children). This further strengthened the villagers’ suspicion. They beat the duo up.

On getting information, the Manapparai police rushed to the spot and tried to take them to the police station. But the villagers forced the police to question the duo in front of them.

Going by the statement of the duo, the police contacted a jamaat in Madurai. The jamaat confirmed that they were thayathu sellers.

Later, the Manapparai police handed the duo over to the Vaiyampatti police. Perumampatti falls under the Vaiyampatti police station limits.
