BHADRAK: After 18 hours of intensive search, Bhadrak Snake Helpline on Sunday spotted one male and two female cobras from the mud house of Bijay Bhuyan at Paikasahi village under Dhamnagar NAC. The length of cobras is 2.1 metres.
Earlier on Saturday, the family members of Bhuyan had come across snakes around their house and informed the Snake Helpline, a voluntary forum that helps rescue snakes in distress. The team rushed to the spot and rescued 106 baby cobras along with 20 eggs from a termite mound near wall of the house. Since the mother snake was not rescued, the helpline members again went to the house on Sunday morning and rescued three cobras. Villagers in large numbers gathered in front of Bhuyan’s house to have a look at the reptiles.
S K Mirza, head of Bhadrak Snake Helpline, said hundreds of baby cobras were found bundled up under the floor after it was excavated. In one of the rooms inside the thatched house, there has been a termite hill. Their religious belief did not allow them to dismantle the ant-hill. The rescued reptiles will be handed over to forest officials, he added.
District Forest Officer Amlana Nayak said the search operation continued from Sunday morning with the help of Forest department personnel. The male and female cobras were recovered at around 1 pm. All snakes will be released in Hadgarh forest, he added. In another incident, a venomous snake was found inside a mosquito net in the house of a villager under Banki police limits in Cuttack district on Saturday.
