The Grantham St car park will be closed on Tuesday.
Grantham Street car park will be closed on Tuesday after concerns heavy vehicles may break through the asphalt.
Independent experts will be assessing the car park, Hamilton City Council Team Leader Landscapes Zeke Fiske said in a statement.
In May, council introduced a 4-tonne weight limit for the carpark and boat ramp.
In April last year, American Tourist Adam Trzcinski paddled through a flooded Grantham St car park (file photo).
An independent risk assessment revealed that heavier vehicles such as cranes with load dispersing anchor point/arms could break through the surface of the car park.
Engineering advice recommended vehicles (or combinations of boat/trailer/towing vehicle) weighing more than 4000kg/4 tonnes were at greater risk.
"In late 2017, we arranged for routine, independent technical assessments of a number of riverside assets in the central city, checks that ensure our public assets are safe and functional.
"This included the Grantham St car park.
"Our expert advice was that further work was needed to determine the structural integrity of the car park."
A ground-penetrating radar will be used to scan the whole car park area and check if any remedial work needs to be done.
Fiske said it's too early to comment on any costs until after the investigation is complete.
The car park's gate will be closed and access will only be permitted for contractor or council-owned vehicles.
The car park will reopen on Wednesday 27 June.
