Thiruvananthapuram: On Monday, Shanthi Praveen, a resident of Poovar, was at her wit’s end trying to get her name added in the
ration card of her husband’s family. She had a tough time to get the work done as hundreds of people had thronged the City Rationing Office (south), Vanchiyoor, to submit their applications for new ration cards or correction and related work.
“I had come to the office to submit an application to include my name in the ration card of my husband’s family. I had to spend more than an hour at the
supply office to complete the formalities,” said Shanthi.
Selvi Stella, a homemaker from Poonthura, said: “We were told that forms will be available from the supply office, but on arrival we had to
rush to take photocopies of the forms, as there was shortage of forms. I came to submit application to correct an error in the ration card,” said Selvi.
The supply offices had engaged all employees, including manager and clerical staff, to manage the rush of people.
Meanwhile, a notice that reads, ‘no applications related to ration card will be accepted’ has been put up at the taluk supply office, as specific dates have been allotted to different areas. Unaware of the notice, hundreds of people visited the office with applications. “I came to submit an application to change the address in the ration card. But, the date for receiving application is scheduled on July 9,” said Veena G Nair, a resident of Anayara.
“More than 500 applications were received and people, who did not have the required documents, were informed that another phase to submit applications will be held after two weeks. Special helpdesks were arranged to manage the rush. We had decentralised the areas to control the rush, which will benefit the people,” said A Shanavas, taluk supply officer, Thiruvananthapuram. tnn
