Gurugram: A steely determination to save environment!

GURUGRAM: Sameera Sateeja is working hard towards making her city environment-friendly.

A resident of Sector-14 in Gurugram, Sameera, who is associated with many social groups and is working for the environment cause, has started a steel 'crockery bank' to keep her city away from the plastic pollution.

She lends people steel utensils for "functions where a lot of plastic glasses and plates are being used by people, which in turn leads to pollution".

How did this idea come? In a Chabeel (In summers, groups of people serve meetha paani to the people as part of their religious beliefs), she saw people serving water in disposable glasses. She thought that people are doing "good job, but risking the environment by using disposable plastic".

She had a word with the company which manufactures disposable glasses and plates. She learnt that to make three glasses, one glass water is used that means by using water, plastic is produced and then after serving water in the same glasses, it is disposed of leading to pollution.

This gave her idea of crockery bank. She started the bank with 100 glasses and 100 plates. Launched a few days back, her bank now has more than 200 glasses and 150 plates. She said that soon banks will be opened in all the sectors.

Sameera has a Facebook page (Crockery for Everyone) too for her project and "friend Dr Aarushi is helping" her.

For any function, Chabeel or Bhandara (community banquet), anyone can get the utensils from this crockery bank. All one has to do is visit the Facebook page, share programme date and contact number. One will get a call and the needy person will have to give in writing to the RWA functionary or councillor. And submit two ID proofs.
