Up to 30 firefighters from West Midlands Fire service are fighting the blaze with six fire engines currently on the scene on Holly Lane in Wishaw.
Though it has not yet been confirmed, social media users have said a tractor is on fire.
The fire service received up to 15 calls from worried members of the public when plumes of smoke were seen from miles away.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 2.18pm, Birmingham Live reports.
The news comes as Britain's two-week heatwave begins today, sparking Government alerts for dangerous weather.
Meanwhile, firefighters were battling another blazing fire in the Yorkshire Moors which was sparked by scorching temperatures that have gripped Britain.
The fire is at Saddleworth Moor - an area which saw another fire last night which was extinguished shortly after.
According to the Huddersfield Examiner, the grass caught light again this morning due to strong winds and high temperatures.
