Flagler County is about to take an economic hit.
Mettawa, Illinois-based Brunswick Corp. announced plans to close its Sea Ray Boats manufacturing plant in Flagler County "as soon as practical," in a media release on Monday.
The company had put the Sea Ray division up for sale in December 2017 and expected the deal to close by the end of the second quarter of 2018.
Company officials said instead of selling Sea Ray, the brand will be restructured.
"Although there was interest in the business, the offers we received did not reflect an appropriate value for this premium brand, and did not meet our expectations," said chairman and CEO Mark Schwabero, in a media release.
Instead of selling the division, Brunswick will "wind down" the sport yacht and yacht production of Sea Ray at the Flagler County and Sykes Creek plants, eliminating as many as 825 jobs at both plants. Sea Ray employs 440 people at the Flagler County facility.
Helga van Eckert, executive director at the Flagler County Department of Economic Opportunity, said her office has already reached out to Sea Ray officials and spoken with representatives of Enterprise Florida and CareerSource Flagler/Volusia regarding the announcement.
