GENOA – Two 15-year-old boys are safe after their canoe capsized Sunday afternoon in the Kishwaukee River, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
The canoe overturned about 2:46 p.m. between Route 72 and Pleasant Hill Road north of town, according to the release. It says the boys were stuck along the bank and unable to get out and eventually got separated.
One of the boys called 911, and dispatch used GPS to pinpoint his location, where he was found quickly, the release says. He was rescued by a fire boat and reunited with his parents at the scene.
Deputies searched for other boy, who was later found at his house after making to shore and getting a ride home.
No foul play was suspected, but the release said because of the recent rain, the water level was elevated and had a strong current.
The Genoa and Sycamore police departments and multiple fire departments assisted in the case.
