OPP say a 35-year-old man is facing a list of charges after driving along the QEW on an ATV before crashing into an OPP cruiser.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says OPP received numerous calls that an ATV was driving "erratically" on the QEW this morning.

"We got called this morning to something that I can tell you is a first for me," said Schmidt in a Twitter video. "Obviously not allowed on the QEW."

Police say a 35-year-old man and 33-year-old woman were on the ATV coming from Beamsville Ont. and into Hamilton and Burlington.

Schmidt says the ATV crossed the Burlington Skyway Bridge, went into Burlington, and ended up down towards Waterdown Road where it turned around which is where police saw it travelling.

It made it as far as Eastport Drive at the lift bridge.

Schmidt says the ATV then slammed into a parked OPP cruiser that was involved in the incident.

The officers weren't in the cruiser at the time, say police.

Schmidt the driver then attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested a short distance away.

Both the man and woman were taken to hospital. Police say the man was transported with minor injuries.

The driver is now facing a list of charges say police.

The collision reconstruction team is on scene.

Eastport Drive is closed in both directions while the investigation continues.

OPP say the investigation is now being turned over to the SIU who have invoked their mandate.

The SIU investigates all reports involving police where there is death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
