Tirupur: Several residents, who attended the grievance day meet at the collectorate here on Monday, submitted petitions against opening of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlets in resiential as well as commercial areas.
Tasmac authorities have been taking steps to open new liquor shops in various places, especially after the Supreme Court relaxed restrictions on establishing the shops. In many places, local residents showed their opposition as they feel that it will affect normalcy in such areas.

Residents from Lakshmi Theatre of Samundipuram, Uthukuli Road of Tirupur corporation, Karanampettai in Kodangipalayam panchayat, and Palladam petitioned the district administration to stop the inauguration of Tasmac shops in their areas. “The authorities closed a Tasmac shop on Uthukuli Road and shifted one of the shops near to Mannarai graveyard. But now, two new Tasmac shops and a recreation club have opened on Uthukuli Road. Since many schools and knitwear companies are situated on the road , the presence of the liquor shops will affect children as well as commuters. So, opposition parties have passed a common resolution to close those shops,” a CPM functionary said.
