KOLKATA: A second-year hotel management student who was riding
helmetless and was allegedly racing with a group of friends, was killed when he lost control and rammed into the kerb of a footpath on a curved portion of Lake Gardens flyover on Sunday morning.
Souradeep Singha(20), was possibly returning to his Bakul Bagan Road hosme on his new
Bajaj Dominar 400, after he had stayed at a friend’s place with a group of companions watching the Germany-Sweden faceoff together. The
accident took place at a sharp curve on Deodhar Rahman Road, which is the approach road to the Lake Gardens flyover between
Prince Anwar Shah Road and Southern Avenue. The pillion rider, Monojit Nandan(30), who too didn’t have a helmet, received severe injuries on his head and body. Nandan was admitted at a private nursing home in Elgin Road.
“Since none of the riders had helmets on, they suffered most of the injuries on their head. We are probing if they were racing. We are checking the CCTV footages of the surrounding spots to locate the other bikers. Once the pillion rider is in a position to speak, we will interrogate him to find out how the accident happened,” said an officer of Charu Market police station.
Police said as per CCTV footage and versions of cops posted in the previous intersections, there were at least four bikes, all with pillion riders, speeding and racing among each other as they headed towards the flyover. However, after the accident, none had stopped to help the two.
Singha was first spotted by a police patrol van around 5.45am, around 15 minutes after the accident. They rushed the two of MR Bangur Hospital, less than a km from the spot, where Souradeep was declared dead on arrival while Monojit was referred to another staterun hospital. Nandan’s family, however, got him admitted at a nursing home in Elgin Road.
Souradeep’s mother Alpana, a resident of Bakulbagan Road, said her son had left home around 10.30pm on Saturday and was supposed be back on Sunday. Souradeep was their only child. His father has been partially paralysed for the past 15 years since a celebral attack.
