Kiwi social media star Jamie Curry reveals she's getting married after struggling with sexuality

Kiwi YouTube star Jamie Curry has revealed she's getting married to another woman.

Napier native Curry, 21, shot to fame as a teenager with a series of frank videos about her life. But in recent years her steady stream of content dried to a trickle, causing her 1.2m subscribers to question what was going on.

In an emotional video posted on Sunday, Curry revealed she'd been away because she'd been depressed, struggling with body image issues, and trying to figure out her sexuality.

However she also revealed that she was now the happiest she's ever been, thanks partly to falling in love for the first time - with a woman she's now engaged to.

In the video, titled "my sexuality", Curry said she wanted to address why she hadn't been making content. "I just wasn't happy. I didn't make videos because I was sad, guys," she said.

She said her depression started when she left high school. She felt lost and purposeless, and as a result began to put on weight - something her fans constantly pointed out.

"I just became really self-conscious. I didn't want to be on camera because I just didn't feel comfortable with myself," Curry said.

"I could barely look at myself in the mirror, let alone stare at myself for a couple of hours while I edit my face."

She lived alone in a countryside cottage for eight months hoping to "find herself" but at the end of that period she still felt "lost".

Part of the problem, Curry said, was her sexuality. She found she wasn't attracted to males or females, and struggled to find a "label" she felt fitted her sexuality.

"Probably the last four years I spent trying to find my label ... I know this sounds dumb, but it was so important for me to find a label or a place where I could fit in, and give me a direction to go in," Curry said.

In the end, that problem solved itself. "To this day I still don't really know what my label is, or what category I sit in," Curry said.

"But I do know that I fell in love. I met this person and I was attracted to them basically instantly. But we were talking and talking and I was waiting for that point for me to switch off or get bored or just not have any interest any more, but it never went away, the interest grew and the attraction grew, the relationship grew, and I fell in love for the first time ever. And this person happens to be a woman, and she's amazing."

Curry said she wasn't prepared yet to reveal the woman's identity. But she did reveal she had proposed to her partner, and the pair were now engaged.

While the relationship wasn't the sole reason for her newfound happiness, Curry said she was now the happiest she'd ever been - and hinted she was going to resume making regular content.
