The Auto Colony Road Junction, behind GP Hospital, is covered by sewage overflowing from the nearby choked drain. So much is the stagnation on rainy days that the area is a cesspool.
Residents say the junction turned for the worse ever since the second leg of the Gandhipuram flyover construction begun months ago. Compounding the problem are a few damaged slabs on the culvert that have sunk into the drain.
The choking has resulted in sewage overflowing onto the road, which has become an important link between GP Signal and Siddhapudur after the Coimbatore City Police have enforced traffic diversion to enable the flyover construction.
A Corporation health wing officer says the civic body is aware of the problem and has taken steps to divert the sewage eastwards to minimise stagnation. But the Corporation cannot do much because of the flyover construction. Nor can it replace the culverts as the traffic flow is heavy throughout the day.
Therefore the Corporation has taken steps to divert the sewage. And, it is also regularly removing silt from the canal.
Former councillor of the area A. Nandhakumar says notwithstanding the fact that flyover construction is under way, the Auto Colony Road Junction has been a notorious spot for choked drain.
He has raised the issue several times with the Corporation but it has done very little to remedy the situation.
Senior Corporation officials say that once the flyover construction is over, the civic body will reconstruct the drain on Chinnasamy Road.
