
At least five people have been killed in rain-related incidents as heavy showers battered large areas of Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, affecting road traffic and rail operations, IANS reported. Heavy rains lashed Mumbai early Monday morning resulting in waterlogging at several places including roads in and around Dadar Hindmata, Kurla, Santacruz Chembur Link Road, Mithi River bridge in Kurla and Kalina.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heavy to very heavy rain will continue in the city. More than 50 buses of BEST have been diverted due to waterlogged roads. However, the rainfall has not affected the operations at the Mumbai airport till now. “These heavy showers are due to a cyclonic circulation over north Konkan and adjoining south Gujarat and another circulation in the Bay of Bengal. We expect the rain activity to increase in the coming week, with scattered heavy to very heavy rain on June 27 and 28 in parts of north Konkan, including Mumbai,” an IMD official said.

Owing to the heavy showers, several parts of the city, like Dharavi, Sion, Matunga, Hindmata, Malad, Kurla, Andheri subway, Bhandup, Worli and Lower Parel, were flooded with water up to two to three feet, and vehicles got stuck in some places.

Several offices in western suburbs have declared a holiday and asked employees to leave for home due to heavy rains
A slab of a building has collapsed in south Mumbai's Pydhonie region. No casualty has been reported. The incident took place at Nagdevi street.
Train services were suspended between Vaitarna and Virar stations due to waterlogging at Virar station. According to Western Railway, water came on the tracks from the nearby hills. Senior officials have approved train movement on the tracks at 2.45 pm, after water receded from the tracks.

Heavy rains also lashed Gujarat causing waterlogging in parts of Valsad district's Umbergaon Monday morning.
The monsoon made landfall in Kerala two days ahead of schedule on May 29 but has made sluggish progress last week, delaying rains to parts of west and north India. It has, however, revived over the weekend and is advancing over Gujarat (Saurashtra region), Veraval and Ahmedabad.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is expected to hit New Delhi and other parts of the North Indian plains on June 29. In a respite from the scorching heat, the national capital is likely to receive pre-monsoon showers from June 27. Read more

On August 29, 2017, well-known gastroenterologist Dr Deepak Amrapurkar had died after falling into an open manhole, less than a kilometre from his home in Prabhadevi. The manhole had been opened by residents of a nearby slum to drain water from their flooded homes. Following the incident, the BMC put nets over the city’s manholes. More recently, on June 8, a three-year-old died in Trombay after falling into an open drain. The cover of the drain had blown open due to ‘water pressure’. Police filed a complaint against the private contractor who had failed to clean the silt obstructing the flow of water into the drain.
The previous weekend, with heavy showers forecast, Sandeep Chaughule and his friends had been braced for the worst. June 8 had passed by quietly. But by the time he had reported to work on June 9, overnight showers had resulted in floodwater rising dangerously at Hindmata Junction in Parel, Central Mumbai. Within an hour, the water had reached up to the pavement and snaked forward, forcing Chaughule to prise open the nearest manhole and hope for the best. Read more

The suburban main line of CR runs from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Karjat, Khopoli and Kasara, the Harbour Line runs from CSMT to Panvel and the Trans-Harbour Line is from Thane to Vashi and Panvel.
"There is some water accumulation at Sion due to continuous rains but trains are running on all three lines of the Central Railway (main line, harbour and trans-harbour) with a slight delay of 5 to 7 minutes," CR Chief Public Relations Officer Sunil Udasi said.
A container broke down on a bridge at suburban Vikhroli near Eastern Express Highway this morning, because of which vehicular movement in the area was slow, the Mumbai Police said.
Two persons were killed Sunday evening when a tree fell on them near Metro Cinema in south Mumbai, PTI quoted an official from the disaster management unit of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as saying. A 13-year-old boy was killed and his parents were injured when an adjacent wall collapsed on their house at Wadol village in Ambernath taluka of Thane around 2.15 am today, the district civic body's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

"No casualty was reported in the incident. The fire brigade and Mumbai police officials have reached the spot and are assessing the situation," an official of the BMC's disaster management cell said.

Seven cars were damaged after wall of an under-construction building collapsed at around 4.45 am today, on Vidyalankar road in Wadala's Antop Hill, following heavy rain.

"The city is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall today," said KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director-general, western region, IMD Mumbai.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continous rain in the city with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places.
With Mumbai receiving continuous rain showers through Sunday, the Santacruz observatory has recorded 231.4 mm rainfall for 24 hours till 8.30 am Monday. This is the first time this monsoon that Mumbai received more than 200 mm rainfall in 24 hours.
At the international airport, authorities reported low friction on the main runway due to heavy showers. A spokesperson said the main runway was also shut for maintenance for half-an-hour in the afternoon while the secondary runway was operational.
