At a time when we keep reading and hearing about how people are cheated, there comes a good samaritan who restores our faith in humanity and shows that there are heroes amongst us. A similar incident occurred with Santosh Kumar Mandal, 70 and his wife Tranda Mandal, 60, residents of Kolkata.

The couple arrived in Ranchi on June 14 to attend the Annaprasan (First Rice) ceremony of their grandchild and took a cab from the airport to their daughter’s house in New Area Morhabadi. After reaching the destination the couple realised that they left the bag in the cab which contained valuables worth Rs 4 lakh. Since the couple didn’t take a prepaid taxi, they didn’t have any way to contact the driver.

The Mandals immediately rushed back to the airport and got in touch with The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) inspector, Kundu who advised the Mandals to return the next day morning as usually no cab drivers return to the airport at night.

The next morning, before the Mandal family was leaving for the airport, the CISF officials, Inspector — Bipin Kumar and Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) — Panna called informing that the cab driver, Promod Yadav 30, had returned their bag with all their valuables to them, much to their relief.

Having discovered the bag in his car that morning while cleaning, Promod immediately reached airport and reported the bag to the CISF team where Bipin Kumar and Panna called at the number mentioned as RSVP in the invitation card for the event, which they found inside the bag, to inquire about the missing bag.

The Mandals reached at the airport and found everything inside intact in the bag. “Promod exhibited exemplary behaviour and his honest deed should be lauded. It is people like him and the CISF officials who are the real heroes in today’s world. “We thank Promod for his efforts for setting such a remarkable example of honesty and truthfulness with his guiding principles in life,” said Mandal. The Mandals eventually rewarded the cab driver with Rs. 4000 cash reward. The CISF officials refused any reward saying it was their duty and were happy with just a token box of sweets to celebrate their honesty and good deed.
