The mechanical device successfully tested at Tank Bund

To ensure quicker immersion of idols during Ganesha festivities, the Hyderabad police have experimented a new quick release hook on Friday.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) D.S. Chauhan said that the mechanical hook is developed by a private firm and was successfully tested at Tank Bund in the presence of officials from traffic wing and GHMC. The officials generally install four hooks on each crane for immersion every year. “This year also four hooks will be used, but with a difference. They are developed on the famous cantilever principle. Once the hooks touch water surface, they get released immediately due to buoyancy of water,” he said.

He said that earlier they used a ‘U’ shaped hook weighing about 15 kg for lowering the idols into water, which needed manpower. “But, this hook which is self-release does not need human intervention and is quick and safe,” he said.

Process over quickly

Central Zone DCP P. Viswa Prasad said that this year the process would be completed in less than two minutes, further depending on the crane. “With immersion time coming down due to the usage of new technology, a traffic jam and deployment of police force can be reduced substantially,” he said, adding that the hook is hardly one feet. The police will soon conduct another round of demonstration and the iron-made hook can take loads up to 20 tonnes. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar, DCP (DD) Avinash Mohanty and other officials have monitored the demonstration.
